McKay, Winnifred Margaret “Winnie” (nee Hughes)
Passed away peacefully at Orchard Villa Nursing Home in Pickering with her daughters by her side on Monday, May 13th, 2019. Winnie was born in Oakville in 1924, later in life she moved to Bronte after her marriage. In 1967, she moved to Starkville with her husband where they farmed the McKay family homestead until 2007, at which time they moved into Newcastle. Jack, beloved husband of 69 years predeceased Winnie in 2015. Loving mother of Bonnie Miller of Toronto, Lynn MacNab and her husband Jim of Smithville. Proud grandmother of Tara Miller O’Donoghue (Aidan), Chris Miller (Alanna), Jonathan MacNab (Marcia), Jessi Matthie (Ben). Adoring great-grandmother of Alexandra, Jacob, Abigail, Isabella, Madelynn, Clara, Hannah, William and Nora. Dear sister of William Hughes (Beverley), predeceased by siblings: Charles, who is survived by his wife Betty; Roy, who is survived by his wife Edith; sister Lily and brother Reggie. Winnie will be lovingly remembered by brother-in-law Bob MacKay and wife Daisy, sisters-in-law Charlotte MacKay (Jim) and Connie MacKay (Bud), as well as her many nieces, nephews and cousins. Winnie was a feisty and hard-working woman who adored her family and even in her 90’s, a well-known sight in town as she made her way on foot to conduct her grocery shopping. A visitation will be held at the Newcastle Funeral Home, 386 Mill Street S., Newcastle on Tuesday, May 21st 2019 from 6 – 9 p.m. Funeral service in the Chapel on Wednesday, May 22nd at 11 a.m. Interment at Trafalagar Lawn Cemetery, Oakville.
