John Claire Bruce Bonnetta
September 1, 1953 - February 7, 2009
“Gone Hunting” --
in the comfort of his home, with wife Rita and children, Joshua, Jonas, Jacob and Rachel together, has finally, peacefully, left us after a 7 year journey with Primary Amyloidosis. John has also left behind his mother Evelyn Bonnetta, his brothers Bill, Stuart (Carol) and Hal (Susan) and favorite sister Shelly (Bill). John will be missed by his other family, Rita’s siblings and spouses; Frank and Danielle, Suzanne, Mary and Greg, Peter, Janette, Kathy and Geoff, Margaret and Al, Martin and Elizabeth and the 26 nieces and nephews he enjoyed with all his heart. John and Rita were married in Whitby in June of 1978, over 30 years ago, and were blessed with four children. John’s battle with this disease was one of courage, a sense of humour, and more than anything a fierce strength to protect his family from the sadness in his heart and the tears he rarely shed. His sadness was in leaving a life he loved and a family he cherished. He was not afraid to die and claimed he would be with us and protect us always from his cabin in the skies. A humble man, John never wanted a big fanfare of goodbyes, didn’t want people to take time from work or travel a long distance. He made every effort to speak with those he loved and rather wanted just a party for us all to come together in laughter, remembering the good times, and draw strength and comfort from being together. Of course he did mention that he wanted everyone to wear hunting gear and speak about him with a beer in their hand and a grin on their faces. Expressions of sympathy may be e-mailed to

What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments,
but what is woven into the lives of others. --Pericles

In lieu of flowers, Rita and John would like to ask you to consider a donation to the Canadian Amyloidosis Support Network, and also to Bon Echo, A Lasting Gift, where they work to preserve the park landscape and in hopes of erecting a park bench in his name where visitors can sit long, talk much and laugh often.
